The eyes are one of the main focal points of the face. Unfortunately they are the first structures to show obvious aging changes. Patients report looking "tired", or "unhappy" due mostly to sagging of the eyebrow and skin of the upper-lids as well as heavy bags under the eyes.

Fortunately, the procedure known as blepharoplasty or eyelid lift can help restore a more youthful appearance. It is performed alone or in combination with a facelift or neck lift to improve overall appearance.

Dr. Cilento has extensive experience in both upper and lower eyelid rejuvenation. During your consultation, he will discuss all treatment options to help you restore a more youthful appearance.

In some patients who have obstructed vision from excess upper eyelid skin, eyelid surgery may be reimbursable by third party payers. If this appears to be the case our staff will arrange a visit to an ophthalmologist for the testing necessary to document such obstruction.

Also, oftentimes some of the drooping or sagging in the upper lid area is attributable to the eyebrows drooping in conjunction with eyelid skin. For this reason it is common for Dr. Cilento to recommend a forehead lift in select patients in combination with their blepharoplasty.

Some of the coexistent signs of aging such as fine lines and crows feet can be addressed in other ways. Botox or Dysport injections can lessen and prevent crows feet. The crepe-like changes in the lower lids can be treated with fractionated laser and deep grooves and dark circles under the eyes can be treated with injectible fillers. Injections of fillers and Botox are performed by Dr. Cilento but the laser procedures are performed at participating MedSpa's in the area.

Anesthesia & Surgery Length

Most surgeries are performed in an operating room in an outpatient surgery center or hospital. Light intravenous sedation and local anesthesia are used in most cases for patient comfort. The procedure generally lasts 1-2 hours depending on the complexity of the problem.

Upper lid blepharoplasty is a fairly straightforward procedure involving removal of skin, muscle and variable amounts of fat from the upper eyelid. It is performed alone or in combination with a forehead lift to help rejuvenate the upper eyelid/brow complex.

Lower lid blepharoplasty is a more delicate operation and has many variations and nuances. Dr Cilento performs both transconjunctival (no external skin incision) and skin muscle flap (small external incision) for lower lid blepharoplasty depending on the patients anatomy and degree of aging.

Detailed postoperative instructions are given.

Usually a patient feels "recovered" after a week. By this time the patient has had their first post operative visit and has had sutures removed and a great deal of the swelling has resolved, bruising, if present, can linger in a mild form for 10 days to two weeks depending on the patients skin type. Discomfort is minimal and is typically easily controlled.

For lower lids, taping is sometimes required for one to two weeks following suture removal but this is rare. The wounds generally reach the height of redness at around 4 weeks but this generally fades fully my 2 months or so.
