Dr. Ben Cilento and the staff at Cilento Facial Plastics are proud to provide personal service to patients at our office in Spring, TX. In addition to performing plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures, we also create value for our patients through non-surgical treatments. These include comprehensive skin care, aesthetic services like hydrafacials, and microneedling combined with radiofrequency energy.
What is Radiofrequency Microneedling?
Radiofrequency (RF) microneedling is a form of collagen induction therapy that has become increasingly popular for adults interested in promoting youthful skin. It is performed to induce collagen proliferation in a gentle, yet efficient manner. This treatment draws more collagen and elastin into an area of the skin by creating controlled injuries to the uppermost layers of tissue. It is much more powerful than microneedling alone, with clinically proven better results.
How does Microneedling work?
Microneedling works by triggering the production of new collagen and elastin. Collagen is the protein that we know to support youthful skin. It does so by creating a scaffolding beneath the surface, where connective tissue builds a matrix for smooth, radiant skin. We also know collagen as a natural “wound-healer.” It is a protein that floods into scrapes and cuts to regenerate healthier, more resilient tissue. Elastin is a chemical that we find in the walls of arteries as well as in the lungs. Why? It gives tissues the necessary stretch to perform optimally. Where collagen gives skin its firm foundation, elastin balances this with softness. The added benefit of RF energy causes a heat shock cascade that increases the production of collagen and the tightening of the skin overall.
When tiny micro-wounds are made using medical-grade instrumentation and technique, we are able to invite more of these potent chemicals into the skin that needs a bit of tightening and toning.
What Areas of the Body Can Microneedling Treat?
One of the advantages of RF microneedling is that this treatment is very versatile. The areas that microneedling can treat include:
- Around the Eyes
Most patients seek treatment for facial rejuvenation. However, our team performs microneedling on the neck and chest to reduce pigmentation and wrinkling, as well as thinning skin. It can also be performed on the stomach or other areas of the body affected by stretch marks or sagging skin.
RF Microneedling Treatment
The RF microneedling treatment is performed in the clinical setting and is designed for safety and efficacy. This technique is far beyond the dermal rolling that is performed at home. The risk of infection is lower and the potential for aesthetic improvement is much greater. Treatment is conducted using an appropriate mechanized microneedling instrument that is passed over the skin in a specific pattern. Needle depth is adjusted from .5 mm to 3 mm based on the type of skin being treated. For instance, needle depth may increase in areas of more fatty tissue, such as the stomach, and it may decrease across the forehead and around the eyes. The entire process can take from 30 minutes to over an hour depending on the area of treatment.
Does Microneedling Hurt?
We can understand that microneedling sounds like a painful endeavor. Skin redness is a natural side effect of treatment, which can make microneedling look painful, as well. It isn’t. We make the treatment process as comfortable as possible by applying a topical numbing cream to the skin prior to treatment. This solution is left on the skin for several minutes, allowing time for full absorption. Most patients feel little if any sensation at all during microneedling treatment.
Recovery After Collagen Induction Therapy
The primary side effect of microneedling is redness. Initially, this will be noticeable, and may also include minor bleeding that lasts a short time. Since the creation of tiny channels in the skin increases the absorption of topical serums and creams, patients may be advised on specific products to support the healing process. Within a day or two, redness should dissipate significantly, if not completely. The skin may begin to feel tighter and softer after the very first treatment. However, up to four follow up treatments are suggested for optimal, lasting results.
How Long do the Microneedling Results Last?
The purpose of microneedling treatment is to elicit long-lasting results by encouraging collagen remodeling on a long-term basis. After a series of treatments, collagen and elastin regeneration may continue for several months. The aging process is one that never stops. It is also one that affects all of us differently. Prolonging the results from microneedling involves good daily skin care and sun protection at the very least. To further promote youthfulness, routine microneedling may be obtained once or twice each year. Dr. Ben Cilento also offers state of the art additions to the RF microneedling experience including PRP (The Vampire Facial) and Amniotic fluid (The “Baby Face” Facial).
Microneedling with PRP and Amniotic fluid
The current trend is to add products to the skin after the needles have opened micropores. There are many companies that put out product lines directly related to this process. These include hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and various serums designed to soothe and hydrate the skin. Some of the more innovative and popular substances are natural body products such as “platelet rich plasma” (PRP) and Amniotic Fluid or “Amnio”. The idea behind these products is that the substances contained in the products renew, and rejuvenate the patients own skin cells via growth factors (PRP and Amnio) and stem cells (Amnio).
WHAT IS Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Platelet activation plays a key role in the process of wound and soft tissue healing. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a portion of the patient’s own blood having a platelet concentration above baseline. This tends promote a healing environment and has proven clinical improvement in hair growth, elasticity, wrinkling, volume and overall youth of the skin. The PRP is essentially harvested from the patient’s own blood and spun down in a centrifuge on site. The centrifuge allows separation of the blood products and harvesting of the plasma containing a rich concentration of platelets.
Allowing the platelets to get beyond the epidermis via RF microneedling or direct injection allows for the action of the platelet to rejuvenate the dermis directly. This action has given rise to multiple protocols like the “Vampire Facial” and other. They are popular because they “work”! Patients tolerate the product very well and it has very few side effects. Costs vary based on purity and area of the injection.
The cost of microneedling varies based on the extent of treatment and number of treatment sessions scheduled. We are happy to provide you with an estimated cost for microneedling treatments in our Spring, TX office.
