You can get burned by the sun regardless of the weather. But there is no question that the majority of sun exposure happens during the summer months. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, one in five U.S. adults will get some type of skin cancer in their lifetime due to harmful UV rays. In addition, lengthy sun exposure can also contribute to cataracts, premature aging of the skin, wrinkles, dryness, and age spots. Here are two specific and lesser known ways to protect your skin from the sun.
Look in your closet
It is certainly tempting to wear tank tops and short shorts during those sunny days. But did you know that certain fabrics can help you avoid harmful UV rays? Clothes act like a form of sunscreen because they can shield against sun damage. Open your closet and take a look at the tags on your clothes. Look for pieces made of unbleached cotton, high-luster polyesters, and satiny silk. All of these types of garments can reflect UV radiation or absorb the sun’s rays. They literally act as a shield to protect your skin!
Also, darker materials tend to absorb light better than white material. Clothes that are tightly knit or weaved can help stop the sun’s rays from reaching your skin as well. Last of all, don’t forget to wear a hat! Anything from a chic sunhat to a baseball cap look great during the summer (and all year) and will help guard your face and eyes from the sun.
Don’t forget the lip balm
The lips are notorious for being one of the first spots where skin cancer pops up. This is largely due to the fact that lips often get extended sun exposure. Look for a lip balm product that has an SPF of 15 or more and make sure you apply it every two hours when you’re in the sun. If you love wearing lipstick, find one with an SPF component or wear a SPF lip balm underneath it.
